RULES: Who can submit a video or essay?
Students in grades 9 – 12 can enter a video either as an individual or as a team of two to four (2-4) students. Individual students can submit an essay. Home-schooled entrants must reside and be home-schooled in Washington County. Submissions may be submitted in English or in Spanish.
Each submission must be accompanied by release forms signed by the entrant and participant(s). A signature from a parent or legal guardian for all students under 18 years of age is also required.
By signing the release, the entrant and participants consent to the use of the following by 350.org Washington County and its designees in any manner they deem appropriate in connection with promoting the video submissions or this contest in perpetuity without further compensation in connection with this contest or the prizes awarded:
• Entrant or Participant’s name, photograph, likeness, and voice
• Video, including the film and audio, video stills, and concepts associated with the entry for the purposes of public display or distribution
• Name of School and testimonial in printed, broadcast, social or other news media
Release forms must be received for all persons participating in the production of any video.

The video or essay must address the following questions:
• How does wasted food harm the environment, impact communities and contribute to climate change?
• What are examples of existing solutions already in place in U.S. communities?
• What are actions that people can take to help solve the problem at home?
• What about steps that businesses and government agencies can take?
Essay parameters:
• 1000-1500 words
• Include proper citations
May include graphics, charts, schematics and tables.
Video parameters:
• Must be between 3 and 8 minutes in length;
• No copyrighted materials; must include source citations as needed
• Format of video needs to be .MOV and/or .MP4 files; or upload to YouTube and send us the link.
• Video cannot have offensive language or images
Include actor release forms and parent permission forms (link)

Scientific journals or newspapers
Websites of government agencies or environmental organizations such as 350.org
Personal experiences with efforts to reduce your carbon footprint and/or influence or inform others
Books you have read about this issue.
Interviews of staff at organizations and governmental agencies working on food waste issues. Examples include Washington County Solid Waste and Recycling, city of Beaverton, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Metro, Oregon Food Bank.
Evaluation and Prizes:
Essays will be judged on the quality of the writing, demonstration of understanding the issues and the personal connection you make to this topic. Applicants may also be asked to showcase their submissions at a video screening/essay reading event (optional).
Timeline:
Contest opens January 22, 2019
Entries must be submitted by 5:00 pm April 2, 2019. Winners will be notified April 18, 2019
Event celebration for winners will take place on Thursday, April 25 **Applicants, please be sure to keep that date open!
