I enthusiastically support the Climate Essay Contest sponsored by 350 Washington County. The contest is a great way to engage high school and college minds in understanding and solving the climate crisis. I truly look forward to judging the entries and finding new ways to address this continually worsening problem.
- Bill Bradbury, Former Oregon Secretary of State This is a great opportunity for students to “Do Something”. Global problems like climate change seem overwhelming and people feel like there is little they can do. This leads to feelings of apathy and even depression. One way to avoid these feelings is to do something positive to counter the negative. In addition, participating in events like the 350 Washington County Climate Essay Contest connects you with like minded people. You then realize that there is a large movement that is trying to make change. It is also a great way to get your school involved in the climate movement. - Deke Gunderson, Director of Environmental Studies at Pacific University and member of Forest Grove Sustainability Council Climate change is a complex issue; simultaneously local and global. What I appreciate about 350’s Climate Change Essay contest, is that it will encourage students to think critically and creatively about mitigation projects for their communities, and enhance their ability to communicate persuasively with stakeholders. As future environmental leaders, this is an excellent opportunity for them to work through the process of research and community engagement. - Michelle L.
